There’s been a lot of shuffling around in the DC Universe of late (to put it mildly), but it looks like the Shazam! sequel, Fury of the Gods, is heading toward us as scheduled. To that end, Warner Bros. released a trailer today that not only gives us a glimpse of Zachary Levi as Shazam once again, but also of Helen Mirren kicking his butt.
The trailer starts out innocuous enough: Billy Batson (Levi) and his friends have their Shazam! powers, only to have some ancient gods (of which Mirren is one) come to Earth with plans to take them. Things get pretty epic from there, with Shazam fighting a dragon he calls Khaleesi (which, I admit, made me laugh) and getting pretty beat up by Mirren and Lucy Liu, who plays another god who’s friends with Mirren’s character.
Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:
From New Line Cinema comes Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.
Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is directed by David F. Sandberg (Shazam!, Annabelle: Creation) and produced by Peter Safran, who not only also worked on Aquaman and The Suicide Squad, but also, along with James Gunn, is leading everything to do with DC at Warner Bros. Discovery.
In addition to Levi, Mirren, and Liu, the movie stars Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Asher Angel as Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer (It: Chapter Two) as Freddy Freeman; Adam Brody as Super Hero Freddy; Ross Butler as Super Hero Eugene; Meagan Good as Super Hero Darla; D.J. Cotrona as Super Hero Pedro; Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield / Super Hero Mary; Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley; Ian Chen as Eugene Choi; Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña; Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez; Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez; and Djimon Hounsou as Wizard.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods will hit theaters this March 17th for all your St. Patrick’s Day needs.
